2006 Musica Viva takes over the Huntington Estate Music Festival
The Honourable Jane Mathews AO was born in Wollongong, NSW and studied law at the University of Sydney. She was the first woman to serve as Crown Prosecutor (1977-1980), the first woman judge in NSW, serving on the NSW District Court (1980), and became the first woman on the Supreme Court of NSW in 1987. Jane served on the Federal Court of Australia (1994-2001) and was the President of the Commonwealth Administrative Appeals Tribunal (1994-1999). She is currently an Acting Judge on the Supreme Court of NSW. Jane served as International Association of Women Judges President from May 2004 to May 2006. She hosted one of the most successful conferences in IAWJ history in May 2006. In 2006 Jane was awarded an Order of Australia, Officer (AO) in the General Division for service to the judiciary, to the legal profession, to the University of New South Wales (where she was Deputy Chancellor from 1992–1999), and to music. Her long involvement with music includes relationships with the Australia Ensemble and Goldner String Quartet, the Australian Youth Orchestra, Opera Australia and the Wagner Society amongst many others. Jane is a member of Musica Viva’s Amadeus Society and one of the organisation’s most ardent supporters.
